First Time Traveling To Puerto Rico?

It’s So Easy

Normally, I have no qualms about traveling internationally. That said, I appreciated how much less work I had to do in order to travel to Puerto Rico, which is a U.S. territory. If you’re an American, here’s why it’s easy:

Image result for airplane flight

  1. You don’t need your passport — a license or ID is all you need to fly.
  2. The currency is the U.S. dollar.
  3. While Spanish is the main language of the island, English is widely spoken and everyone in the tourism industry speaks English.
  4. Your U.S. phone plan will work normally without having to get a SIM card or paying roaming charges.

Additionally, there are direct flights to Puerto Rico from all over the U.S. (but especially on the East Coast).

The Perfect All-Around Island

Plenty of people fly to Puerto Rico and never go beyond the confines of their resort. Not my thing, but I get it. Sometimes you need a getaway where you do nothing.

But if you want more than just a beach, Puerto Rico has it all. If you’re visiting for just a few days, like I was, you can easily fit in beach time, adventure time, culture time, and yes, even hanging-out-at-the-pool time.

Flamenco Beach, Culebra, Puerto Rico

Beautiful Beaches

Of course, if you’re going to the Caribbean, you want to see some beaches!

Culebra Island, east of the main island of Puerto Rico, is home to Flamenco Beach, which is frequently voted one of the best beaches in the world in travel magazines and on sites like TripAdvisor.

Coffee Haciendas

Coffee! Most of the world loves it! So, if you’re one of those people, we have great news for you: Puerto Rico is a great place to experience coffee. Coffee was eventually brought to Puerto Rico in 1736. There are innumerable cafes and restaurants to enjoy coffee and not just any coffee, but homegrown Puerto Rican coffee. The delightful coffee bush is used for coffee production on the island at farms usually called Haciendas and some of the smaller Haciendas are open for tours and purchases of their specialty and gourmet blends of fine coffee. Have you long been meaning to visit a working coffee plantation? If you answered yes, you’re in luck. Easily plan a trip to Puerto Rico and take in the sights and sounds of the Caribbean whilst reveling in the aromas and tastes of one of the world’s most coveted beverages. A delicious trip in every sense of the word!

The part of the island known for coffee is the Toro Negro State Forest, or Bosque Estatal de Toro Negro, and it’s Puerto Rico’s highest cloud forest. Located in the Cordillera Central region of the island, the Toro Negro’s mountains reach heights up to 4,400 feet and the range includes Cerro de Punta, Cerro Jayuya, and Cerro Rosa. These are the three highest peaks on the island and nested among these mountains is Lake Guineo, the island’s highest lake, giving rise to an ideal climate that produces the best Puerto Rican coffee. Ripe beans grown in the high, cool, and moist mountain region produces arguably the best coffee in North America. A tour to the area reveals trails, campgrounds, picnic areas, naturally occurring swimming pools, rivers, creeks, and beautiful waterfalls. As you would expect, there are numerous coffee Haciendas in nearby towns including Jayuya, San Sebastian, Ponce, Adjuntas, Las Marias and Lares. While it generally takes 2 hours or more to drive to locations in the mountains from in and around San Juan, the payoff is fantastic with nothing else quite like it. An overnight stay in the area is a popular choice among travelers who appreciate the rich experience of the mountains. Life is about journeys so plan to make seeing Puerto Rico’s beautiful Haciendas a part of your trip or Puerto Rico Vacation plans and you will have unforgettable memories to last a lifetime.
